What Should I Declutter First? A Professional Organiser’s Starting Point

When the whole house feels cluttered, the hardest decision can be where to begin. My rule is simple: do not start with the biggest room. Start with the area that will make everyday life noticeably easier.

Start with something you use every day

A kitchen worktop, hallway drop zone, utility cupboard, bathroom drawer or section of your wardrobe can be a better first project than a loft full of old boxes. You get a visible win and you feel the benefit immediately.

Avoid sentimental items first

Photographs, children's keepsakes, inherited belongings and emotionally loaded paperwork are rarely good warm-up categories. They take longer and use more decision-making energy. Build momentum with easier choices first.

Choose a contained area

One drawer, one shelf or one category gives you a clear finish line. Empty it, group similar things, remove rubbish and duplicates, then decide what deserves to go back.

Declutter before buying storage

Storage shopping feels productive, but it can lock you into keeping a volume of belongings that the room cannot comfortably hold. Reduce first. Organise second. Buy storage last.

Ask which clutter costs you the most time

If mornings are stressful, start with the hallway or wardrobe. If cooking feels difficult, start with the kitchen zone you use most. If bills and school letters disappear, start with paperwork. The best starting point is the one that reduces a repeated daily problem.

What if every room feels equally bad?

Pick the smallest high-impact area and give yourself a short session. If you are still unable to see a sensible order, that is exactly what a Power Hour or an organising day can help with. Sometimes the useful work is deciding the sequence before touching a single cupboard.
